ENGLISH SENTENCE
When we read books, we will find many words. When we listen to someone else speaks, we can soon find or hear that there are set up of words known as sentence. It is just the same case when we ourselves talk to someone. We will use many words to show our saying or opinion. Many words we have heard or said will occur some possibilities to ourselves. First, we know exactly what we have read or heard. Second, we know nothing what we have read or heard at all. Third, we are in the two of the possibilities, we know it little or we do not know little. New learners of English usually are in the third possibility. They are still confused about what they have read or heard. Consequently, learners have to know what the sentence is.
A sentence is setting up of words with full meaning. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. A sentence involves two important elements of subject and predicate. Subject and predicate are primary elements because the two elemants must be used in English sentences. The subject can be pronoun, gerund, to infinitive, noun phrase, gerund phrase, to infinitive phrase, or noun clause. While the predicate must contain finite verb followed by complement, adverb, or object that should complete or explain the predicate.
The following are seven basic English sentence with examples:
1. Subject + Verb >>>>> I sleep.
2. Subject + Verb + Complement >>>>> The book is yellow.
3. Subject + Verb + Adverb >>>>> My father is a teacher.
4. Subject + Verb + Object >>>>> Nobody answered my questions.
5. Subject + verb + Object + Complement >>>>> His fans call him Pailul.
6. Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object >>>>> They wish you good luck.
7. Subject + Verb + Direct Object + Preposition + Indirect Object >>>>> He borrowed some money from her.
As shown at the examples above, the meaning of the sentences cannot be understood clearly when there is not complementary elements. The problem faced by learners is difficulty to differ whether the sentence should use complement, adverb, or object.
Complement is completing subject or object. There should be only one complement in a sentence. It is impossible to put two or more complement in a sentence.
Object is completing transitive verb. It can be occur one or twice in a sentence. When it is the only, it is written object. On the other hand, when there are two object in a sentence, the objects are known as direct object and indirect object.
Adverb is explaining intransitive verb. Such element can occur once, twice, even more in a sentence. It can be adverb of place, manner, and time.
